Close to GH₵10,000 was spent on GIJ Sports Week – GIJ SRC President reveals

Feb 14, 2020

The 2019/2020 GIJ-SRC Sports Week celebration saw a change in venue from gravel to grass as the event was hosted at the El-Wak sports stadium from Thursday, October 17th and Friday, October 18th, 2019 at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

The parks where most sports week celebration were held were the parks in Osudoku Senior High School and the Ghana Prisons Service.

Despite how entertaining it was, scores of students have been in dilemma as to how much was spent during the celebration.
But, speaking in an interview with Radio GIJ’s Discussion Forum, SRC President of GIJ, Joseph Agbezuke revealed that, an amount close to GH₵10, 000 was spent on the sports week even though GH₵5,5 00 was budgeted for the Sports Commission.

Mr. Agbezuke added that, aside the sponsorship of an amount of GH₵2,000 by a Ghanaian-based independent media company, TITA Productions, the sports week was externally financed.

“I would say that the whole sports event at El-Wak came off with close to GH₵10,000 but the original amount that was quoted in the budget was what we used, every other thing was externally sourced”.

According to him, GH₵6,000 was used for securing the venue for the celebration.

“The use of El Wak alone initially or the actual price was GH₵5000 for a day but for two days it is GH₵10, 000. So what happened was that, the inaccurate information we got from the management there was GH₵2500. Unknowingly, 2500 was for primary schools. And that was the information they didn’t give us. So when we got in the process to make payment and it turned out that it was a whole lot altogether. So we had to run errands to make them understand the situation on the grounds before they reduced it to 6,000.”Mr Agbezuke said.

Adding that, he would be disappointed if the next administration goes back to gravel instead of grass.

“We need a field, we need grass. So I would be disappointed if the next administration comes and sends us back to gravel, because, if we have struggled to make it higher and even participated at GUSA games where we came up been 6th, Oh come on we deserve better”.

I chose Ghana over Manchester City– Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan Jj

General captain of Black Stars, Asamoah GyanListen to the Article

Former Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he let go a lucrative deal with English side Manchester City in order to play in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)

Ghana hosted the rest of the African continent during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

Asamoah Gyan was one of the key members of the Black Stars because he started making inroads with Udinese in the Italian Serie A, so much was expected of him.

Asamoah Gyan in an exclusive interview with Pulse.com.gh has revealed that he sacrificed a lot to represent Ghana in the 2008 continental showpiece so he felt unfairly treated and got hurt over criticisms from the Ghanaian sports-loving fans.

“I sacrificed for the nation. I should have been out of the tournament, but I felt that because of the love I have for the country I decided to come because I had a contract to sign for Manchester City, but I ignored the contract. I remember my agent told me I should boycott the Africa Cup of Nations and go for rehab and go and sign the contract.

“At that time I didn’t feel any criticism, starting from the colts level it was like I was being pampered until that time. I didn’t know anything about criticism until that time,” Asamoah Gyan told Pulse Ghana.

“I felt like the criticism was unfair to me because they criticized me and I think it was personal in a game that we won, which Ghanaian were expecting like 10-0. People didn’t understand what was going on at that time, so I thought I was treated unfairly.

“My mother called me and she was crying. I felt it wasn’t the right time to do that in the middle of the tournament and I felt that the whole nation was against me and at that tender age, I was like 20 years, so I felt that the whole nation was against me.

“But I told him the tournament was very important to me because Ghana was hosting it and I missed the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations and that (2008) would have been my first Africa Cup of Nations and Ghana was hosting, so there was a lot of things going through my mind so that was why I got hurt and I decided to just let it go.

Asamoah Gyan was heavily criticised by a section of Ghanaian sports-loving for living below expectation during the tournament

He threatened to walk out of the camp of the Black Stars, but the President of the Republic of Ghana at the time John Agyekum Kuffour intervened and he rescinded his decision.

Asamoah Gyan has played at seven Africa Cup of Nations and has scored eight goals in the process for the Black Starshe former Sunderland striker is Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals.

He now plies his trade in India for NorthEast United.Source: ghchannel.news.blog Related Articles:
